Newly appointed Chelsea Manger, Jose Mourinho has come in the defence of the English football by stating that despite their disappointing performances in the Champions League this season, the Premier League is stronger than ever.

Mourinho, 50, will return to Stamford Bridge six years after he first left the London club and will be officially unveiled at a press conference next Monday.

The Portuguese refused to acknowledge that he was returning to a poorer top-flight in England.

“The Champions League is a thermometer of world football and English football was out of the competition too early,” he told Chelsea TV.

“When I was here before it was more about us, Man United and Arsenal and after that there was a gap to the other teams. Now you can put five or six teams in the same plan, aiming to reach the Champions League spots which is very difficult, with those with more ambition aiming to win the Premier League.”

While Mourinho’s first reign ended bitterly after his relationship with owner Roman Abramovich soured, his arrival heralded the start of the most successful period in the club’s history as they won the Champions League last season and the Europa League, this time around.
