What makes this season unique is a six-week break in the action for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

The season kicks off on August 5, with Crystal Palace vs. Arsenal, and runs through to the final day on Sunday, May 28, 2023 when all teams will play at the same time for sporting integrity.

A total of 16 matchdays will be played before the stoppage for the Qatar tournament, with hostilities resuming on Boxing Day, Dec. 26, for the usual busy holiday period (three matchdays on Dec. 26, Dec. 31 and Jan. 2).

There will be three midweek rounds, two other FIFA fixture breaks (September and March), and the traditional breaks in the schedule for the FA Cup in January.

A total of 20 clubs will do battle for the English top-flight title, UEFA Champions League places, other European spots and the right to remain in the Premier League next season and avoid relegation to the second-tier Championship, which is the fate that befalls the bottom three clubs.

Manchester City are the two-time defending champions seeking a three-peat. They will face a serious challenge from the other traditional ‘Big Six’ clubs.

Meanwhile, the three newly promoted sides will do battle with the likes of Leeds United and Brentford to avoid the trapdoor. And there are a host of mid-table teams that will hope to take a step up, or at minimum secure their Premier League standing without any major headaches.
